Decimal Hours Chart
Every minute from 1 to 60, converted to decimal hours — the number a payroll system multiplies by your hourly rate. The rule is minutes ÷ 60, displayed rounded half-up to two decimals.

How to read the chart
For a time like 7 hours 45 minutes, take the whole hours as they are (7) and look up the minutes (45 → 0.75): the decimal figure is 7.75 hours. For 7 hours 5 minutes it is 7 + 0.08 = 7.08. Pay is then decimal hours × rate — at $20 an hour, 7.75 hours is $155.00 exactly, which is the point of the conversion.
Two traps and one rounding note
The classic mistakes are writing 15 minutes as 0.15 and 45 minutes as 0.45 — those are clock readings, not decimals: 0.15 hours is actually 9 minutes. The chart exists because the eye wants to copy the minute digits after the point. On rounding: figures here are shown to two decimals, so 25 minutes reads 0.42 rather than 0.41666…. If you are converting a whole week by hand, add the minutes first and convert once — converting each day and adding the rounded decimals can drift a cent or two of an hour across a week. The time card calculator already works that way.
Need the other direction?
The decimal hours converter turns 6.35 hours back into 6 hours 21 minutes and converts hours-and-minutes forward, with the working shown. For clock times rather than lengths — in at 9:15, out at 5:45 — the duration calculator gives the length in all forms at once.
Frequently asked questions
- What is 45 minutes in decimal hours?
- 0.75. Three quarters of an hour. Written as 0.45 it would mean 27 minutes — the single most common timesheet conversion error.
- What is 0.25 hours in minutes?
- 15 minutes: 0.25 × 60 = 15. In the same way 0.1 hours is 6 minutes and 0.5 hours is 30 minutes.
- Why is 1 minute 0.02 and not 0.01?
- Because 1 ÷ 60 = 0.01666…, which rounds to 0.02 at two decimals. The chart rounds half-up throughout, the standard convention in payroll tables.
- Do all employers use two decimals?
- No — some systems keep hundredths, others work in tenths (0.1 = 6 minutes) and many apply timesheet rounding to the nearest 5, 6 or 15 minutes before converting. Use the precision your own timesheet asks for.
